Environmental volunteer recognised for sharing his passion for the natural beauty of the Maroochy River area
George Cowie, volunteer at the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, is passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills of his local environment with visitors of all ages.
The Caloundra Power Boat Club, Bunnings and Radio FM104.9 recognised his important work in May with an award, including meal and gift vouchers.
Mr Cowie, has been spending his spare time maintaining the infrastructure at the sanctuary and explaining the special plants, animals and bird life in the area near Bli Bli that sees the land and the Maroochy River meeting the sea to form complex and delicate ecosystems.
‘I love talking to visitors about the four different vegetation types, dry eucalypt forests, rainforest, melaleuca forest, casuarina woodland, and salt marsh and mangroves and about 200 different bird types,’ Mr Cowie said.
‘Volunteers such as myself are at the sanctuary every Sunday to help visitors discover the beauty and uniqueness of the environment around the 1kilometre boardwalk,’ he said.‘I particularly like maintaining the natural rock ‘bird bath’ so visitors can have easy access to the birds but our fiddler crabs are very special as well.’ ‘Visitors can visit at other times to undertake self-guided walks.’‘The area is wonderful as it is also easily accessible by wheelchairs so it is a place for all.’
‘Interested people can find more information on the sanctuary at the website www.maroochywetlandssupport.org.au .’ The Sunshine Coast Council purchased the area for the sanctuary in the 1990s as an environmental area for the community and officially supports it along with Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny and the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden.
Nominations for the monthly award can be made by emailing FM104.9 at email@example.com , detailing in 25 words the reason for the nomination.
