Helping sick kids inspires Sunshine Coast couple
Sippy Downs couple, Shirley and Errol Strong, have spent 18 years helping sick kids on the Sunshine Coast achieve their dreams through Make A Wish Australia.
According to Errol Strong, he and Shirley get as much out of their voluntary work as they put in.
‘’We find it inspiring to see how the children who live with pain and difficulty every day have such imagination about goals for their lives,’ Mr Strong said.
The Caloundra Power Boat Club, Radio FM104.9 and Bunnings recognised Shirley and Errol’s dedication and commitment in August with an award, including meal and gift vouchers.
‘Make A Wish Australia works with children and teenagers with life-threatening medical conditions to get joy from their incredible wish experience and strength to face the challenges of their illness,’ he said.
‘We are part of a 20-member group of volunteers who work across the Sunshine Coast to arrange the wish made to the Make A Wish headquarters in Melbourne by hospitals, medical practitioners and individuals.’
Shirley Strong said Make A Wish volunteers work in pairs, known as a ‘dream team’ to visit families and talk to the child about their special wish.
‘Once the ‘dream’ is approved by Make A Wish Australia, the team arranges for the special wish to happen,’ Mrs Strong said.
‘Sometimes the child may be too sick to go to where their ‘dream experience’ can happen so the team arranges a virtual situation, ’ she said.
‘Our North Queensland arranged for snow making machine to provide a snow experience for a young girl in Cairns who was too sick to travel.’
‘Other organisations also contribute to the success of ‘dreams’ by providing donations or services.
‘The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has provided a ‘fireman for a day’ experience and Bunnings have donated material for a ‘dream garden.’
Nominations for the monthly award can be made by emailing Radio FM104.9 at email@example.com, detailing in 25 words the reason for the nomination.
